Kovalchuk Persists With the Waiting Game

Over the weekend, the Ilya Kovalchuk (notes) waiting game continued with the Russian star forward, the New Jersey Devils. To see whether the NHL will approve or reject again, the latest $100 million- plus contract proposal, the entire hockey world watching.

In July, the newest offer, the original 17-year, $102 million free- agent contract was rejected by the league and that decision was later upheld by arbitrator Richard Bloch was submitted on Friday with various media reports saying it likely will b e approved by the league. Over 15 years with a cap hit of $6.66 million per year, Darren Dreger of TSN has reported the new deal is worth $100 million.

On Saturday, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello admitted to the Bergen Record’s Tom Gulittih at the new proposal is being pored over by league officials and sounded cautiously optimistic.

Lamoriello told a newspaper, “It’s just waiting f or the league to give, hopefully, their approval. We feel good about what we submitted. I’m not going to get into anything else at all because it could be misleading or misrepresented.”

The league has five days to review a new contract, under the collective bargaining agreement and expectations are that its decision will come Monday or Tuesday. Though ugh the 15-year length could still be a sticking point, it is probably a good bet the new contract is not as heavily front-loaded.

The two-time 50-goal scorer will be then at age 42, which was an issue addressed and criticized strongly in B loch’s arbitration ruling.

NHL: Free Agency Update

NHL Free Agency has been in play for several weeks now, but there are still many key free agents available. The news regarding free agency updates are on every sports betting blog.

Chief among the free agents is Ilya Kovalchuk, who had originally signed a long extension with the New Jersey Devils. That contract was voided for violating the league’s labor agreement, and many rumors continue to swirl around Kovalchuk, including his potential departure to a Russian league.

He’s not the top free agent left. Chicago recently released Antti Niemi, who was the goalie for the Stanley Cup champions. Jose Theodore is another free agent goalie still out there.

Other top players available include forwards Paul Kariya, Lee Stempniak, Mike Comrie, and Eric Belanger. Owen Nolan, who is 38, is also still available. Among defensemen, leading names include Willie Mitchell and Kim Johnnson, another free agent from Chicago’s salary purge.

Over the past few weeks, other names have switched teams. Chicago picked up center John Madden from Minnesota on August 6th, a big signing for the defending champions. Long time Dallas center Mike Modano moved on to Detroit.

San Jose signed defenseman Dean Arsene. The Islanders picked up Sean Bergenheim and Freddy Meyer. Nashville signed Ben Guite. Among stars who resigned with their old teams recently include Nick Boynton staying with Chicago, Teemu Selanne with Anaheim, and Juraj Simek with the Tampa Bay Lighting.

There is still plenty left unsettled in free agency. The soap opera surrounding Kovalchuk will capture most of the attention, but other available stars figure to fill key spots on other clubs.

Mike Modano to join Red Wings

Mike Modano made the logical choice of going home since he couldn’t stay in Dallas and he wasn’t ready for retirement. With the Red Wings, the native of suburban Detroit has agreed to a one-year deal.

In a text message to The Associated Press on Tuesday, he confirmed his decision. For the Minnesota-Dallas franchise, the 40-year-old forward played 20 seasons and he is the leading scorer among U.S.-born players in NHL history. He has spent the last five weeks trying to figure out his next move and the Stars made the tough decision not to re-sign him in late June. While playing golf in Scotland with former Dallas teammate Marty Turco, the answer came.

Modano said, “It was a lot of back and forth internally, but I ultimately decided I wasn’t ready to hang up the skates so I’m going to Detroit. They all told me what a great organization and city it is to play in. And mix in the incredible talent they have playing there and it kind of made my decision for me.”

Modano said he was swayed by discussions with Brett Hull and other former and current Red Wings, although he spoke with Minnesota. Livonia is the place where Modano grew up and his parents are excited to get to see him play more often.

He added, “I’m sure I’ll have plenty of different emotions going through me as we get closer to the day. I haven’t decided yet. I’ve got a few ideas in mind, though.”

Modano has always worn No. 9, but it’s retired by Detroit in honor of Gordie Howe.

Free Agency NHL 2010

The NHL has been having a busy off season of its own, with plenty of wheeling and dealing, while everyone has been glued to the media circus surrounding Lebron James and the NBA’s free agency period.

In defenders, this year’s class of unrestricted free agents is especially strong, so it makes sense that star defenseman Sergei Gonchar, formerly of the Penguins, made the first big splash of the free agency period when he left Pittsburgh to sign a 3 year, $16.5 million deal with the Senators. However, the Penguins quickly signed former Devil Paul Martin (5 years, $25 million) and former Coyote Zbynek Michalek (5 years, $20 million); they wasted no time filling the vacancy. Both players are regarded as top blue-liners, and are expected to shore up the Pittsburgh defense for several years to come. Former Nashville Predator Dan Hamhuis, was another notable defenseman signing, going to the Vancouver Canucks for 6 years and $27 million.

Two of the biggest stars–Patrick Marleau and Marc Savard, in the market for forwards, signed long term deals with their current teams, Sharks and Bruins, respectively.

However, forward Ilya Kovalchuk, a perennial 40-goal scorer, the crown jewel of the 2010 free agents is the incredibly talented. In 2010, traded mid-season from the Thrashers to the Devils, much speculation was made of where he would end up. Although he has not signed anywhere yet, the New York Post reported on 7/5 that he was expected to re-sign with the Devils for 7 years and $60 million.

However, the action is still not over. John Madden, Mike Modano, and Doug Weight, many big name veterans are still waiting to be signed in the remainder of the off-season.

NHL Draft for 2010: Which Team Had Best Draft?

The 2010 NHL Draft was hosted by Los Angeles and they along with their neighbor down the 5 Freeway, Anaheim, had two of the best NHL Drafts. In the NHL Draft, the Anaheim Ducks may have come across the best two way defensive players in their number 12 slot.

When the Ducks drafted, hockey previews favorite, Cam Fowler was not expected to be available and they gladly scooped up the offensive minded defenseman with the pick. the Ducks’ other young defenseman, Luca Sbisa, who was acquired in the Chris Pronger trade last year, will most likely be joined by Fowler. The two could be a great defensive pairing for years to come. California native with their 29th pick of the first round, Emerson Etem and the Ducks also drafted a great goal scorer.

The Los Angeles Kings, the host team for the NHL Draft, also had a strong draft. To stifle scoring threats, Derek Forbort is a gritty defenseman that isn’t afraid of working hard in his own end. Forbort will give the Los Angeles Kings a solid stay at home defenseman that fears no man.

Florida Panthers is another potential winner in the NHL Draft. For Florida, Erik Gudbranson is a perfect pick as not only a scoring threat but he is a young player who has the ability to take the reins of this young team. Put Gudbranson together with 19th pick Nick Bjugstad and 33rd pick John McFarland and Florida could have put together their offensive core for years to come.

NHL: Scott Niedermayer calls it a career after 18 seasons

Hockey lost one of the greatest defensemen to ever play the game on Tuesday when Scott Niedermayer retired from the NHL after 18 seasons on the blue line. Niedermayer is one of the most accomplished defensemen in the game, winning awards and trophies from junior hockey all the way to the Olympic level. After winning the Gold Medal with Canada during the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver; Niedermayer felt it was the right time to go out on top.

Niedermayer’s career got off to a red hot start. During his rookie campaign with the New Jersey Devils in the 1992/93 season, Niedermayer tallied 40 points as a 19 year old. He would go on to amass 172 goals and 568 assists during his career. He leaves the game as perhaps one of the most decorated players in history. Niedermayer won the Norris Trophy (league’s best defenseman), four Stanley Cup Trophy’s (1995, 2000, 2003 with the Devils and 2007 with Anaheim), two Olympic Gold Medals with Canada, a Memorial Cup in junior hockey, and the Gold Medal at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.

Niedermayer played for the Devils until the final five years of his career, at which point he joined the Anaheim Ducks to play alongside his brother Rob. Niedermayer won’t be walking away from the game entirely however; he has agreed to remain on staff with the Ducks as a consultant to general manager Bob Murray.

Stanley Cup won by Chicago Blackhawks

In Game 6 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals on June 8th in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks faced off. Chicago was leading the series 3-2, coming into Game 6. Philadelphia was playing in front of their home crowd and they were one win away from forcing a Game 7. That did not happen, as Chicago won 4-3 in overtime to capture the Stanley Cup.

Antti Niemi, Chicago’s goalie, was not overly impressive in Game 6, but got the job done. In victory, he made 21 saves. Michael Leighton, Philadelphia’s goalie, had a more impressive game stat-wise, making 37 saves, but it was all in vain, as he took the loss.

For Chicago, four different players scored, including Patrick Kane, who made the winning goal in overtime. For Philadelphia, Scott Hartnell was very impressive, making 2 goals. It was a great game; full of back and forth action. To Patrick Kane, no one could compare, though, who was definitely the hero of Game 6. For theChicago Blackhawks, it was a long wait between Stanley Cup victories, but they finally got the job done. Since Chicago had last won a Stanley Cup, it had been 49 years. Buffalo Sabres’ History since 1970

The Buffalo Sabres, since 1970, have been with the NHL. They, in sports history, have been on the wrong end of many of the most devastating losses, causing many to believe in the Buffalo Sports Curse.

In the year 1970, the Sabres began play. The first owners of the team were Seymour Knox III and Northrup Knox.

The late-season trade for winger Rene Robert late in the 1971-72 season, the drafts of winger Rick Martin in 1971 and hockey betting favorite, center Gilbert Perreault in 1970 season highlighted the first two seasons of the Sabres’ history.

In the NHL, in just their third year, the Buffalo qualified for the playoffs. Even champions, Canadiens »”>Montreal Canadiens defeated them in six games.

For the best record in the NHL, Buffalo finished in a tie, in the 1974-75 regular season. They were to face the Philadelphia Flyers, for the Stanley Cup Finals, to which they eventually got qualified. After six games, the Flyers ended up with the Stanley Cup; although Buffalo went on to win the game.

Danny Gare joined the team and continues to be a dominant force in the late 70’s and early 80’s. When they toured the United States, they were the first team to beat the Soviet Olympic Team and won the regular season conference championship.

To Marine Midland Arena, the team moved in the mid 90’s. In their first season, Buffalo won the Northeast Division at Marine Midland Arena (1996-97).

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs: Philadelphia-Chicago Game 1 Review

The Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers kicked off the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals on Saturday, May 29th. Chicago had the advantage of playing at home and were hoping to shutdown Philadelphia’s offense. While Chicago managed to win the game 6-5, it was far from the clean, dominant victory they were hoping for.

The 11 goals that the teams combined for was the highest number of goals in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals in history. While none of the goalies that played in the game were impressive, Antti Niemi picked up the win for Chicago by managing 27 saves. The starting goalie for Philadelphia, Michael Leighton, was pulled and Brian Boucher was put in as the backup. He picked up 11 saves in the loss.

Philadelphia did manage to show off their impressive depth as 5 different players scored a goal. Five different players scored for Chicago as well, including Troy Brouwer who scored twice. The last goal of the game came from an unexpected source, as Tomas Kopecky, who had not played in the last five games, managed to score a very tough goal on Brian Boucher. The only reason that Kopecky was playing was because Andrew Ladd suffered an injury.

The one thing that always holds true in the Stanley Cup Finals is to expect the unexpected. Game 1 of 2010 Finals continued to prove that. While the game may have lacked the pure technical skills expected from the final two teams, it delivered plenty of excitement.
